James Nafus, Myself and I believe Kevin McGann used to climb to the top of the ridge above Bear Creek and roll boulders down the mountain for fun. For those of you that have climbed up there, you may remember there were some cliffs and very steep terrain. Well one day we rolled this big rock down the mountain. It careened down the mountain and near the bottom we saw a large reddish object get destroyed. At the time there were several dogs that ran around the school and one of them I believed belonged to a staff member named Liz. It was a red dog and if memory serves me correctly it was an Iris setter. None the less we saw the red object get destroyed by this rock and panicked because we thought it was the dog. We ran down the mountain as fast as we could to find (thankfully) that it was a log. Were any of you around when the Stil Blew up? |

Was I there that time?, because I remember we used a log to lever this huge rock to the edge.... Then it fell off the cliff to the talus slope... then started bouncing and rolling oh I would say 75 miles an hour or so... then it disintigrated into several still large chunks as it picked up speed and sliced into the timberline.... I remember trees falling, some of the loudest cracks and shattering noises I had ever heard, and some OH @#*%'s and then we went to see if we killed anything.... The old gold mine at the bottom spooked me. It was haunted you know. I remember you getting in trouble for having the book that told you how to build a still. God, who was it that used to make that hooch out of the brewers yeast, honey and orange juice...NASTY. I remember them saying "in three weeks we were going to have one hell of a party".....

You might have been up there with me. That is exactly what I remember. I don't think it was me that got busted for the book. I remember the mine very well! It was fun going in there wondering if we would come across a bear. Who ever it was blew them selves up (as I recall) making that hooch! The first I had heard of teh still was when they got busted after blowing themselves up. I think it came up in a student government meeting. |

| I think the still was Shane Downs and Chris McKenna. Shane recently told me that a kink in the copper pipe caused it and from what he said, it blew up big. I think he thought he was lucky he did not get real hurt. |

| The only injury I remember Shane getting was when he laid his leg wide open with a chain saw while gathering firewood... I guess the still was after my time. |
